After living around the world for a number of years, N. K. Dugan relocated to West Virginia in 2006.  At the time, high quality, all-natural personal care products were nearly impossible to find at any price, much less at a reasonable one.   Dugan searched for such products to no avail, and finally resorted to researching the creation of her own.  Realizing that most everyone prefers the finer things in life when they can find and afford them, the company started to take shape.  Shearwater Falls was founded in October 2007.

With an incredibly diverse educational background from art to engineering, Dugan has held a variety of jobs from curator, marketing manager, information architect, director of information technologies, program manager, scuba instructor, to chef.  She thrives on learning new things and facing new challenges – a truly postmodern girl.

Dugan, a life-long vegetarian, has always preferred a natural lifestyle.  Synthetic ingredients and products have never been an acceptable option for her.  An avid conservationist, she has always looked for ways to be more environmentally-friendly.  Shearwater Falls is a reflection of these beliefs.

Always an inquisitive traveler, Dugan has spent her life visiting as much of the world as possible.  While living in Honduras, she learned about plant medicines that the local people have used for centuries.  In Africa she lived near an essential oil refinery, where tons of clove buds became clove oil and eucalyptus leaves were pressed into eucalyptus oil.  She also learned about the traditional uses for these plant-based, healing oils.  Africa also provided a wealth of information on natural tree nut oils such as coconut, shea, and cocoa, as well as how people used those oils for personal care.

All of Dugan’s life experiences have combined to form the basis of Shearwater Falls.
